RUSON & RUSOM

A Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing (RUSON) is a person currently enrolled at a university to study nursing. You will have successfully completed at least 12 months of a Bachelor of Nursing Degree or 18 months of a Double Degree/Paramedicine.  

A Registered Undergraduate Student of Midwifery (RUSOM) is a person currently enrolled at a university to study midwifery. You will have successfully completed at least 12 months of a Bachelor of Midwifery.

Overview

RUSONs and RUSOMs are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a student nurse/midwife, and work under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife.  

RUSONs and RUSOMs work within a 'core duties and exclusion list'. This is a different scope to a nursing/midwifery student placement. RUSONs and RUSOMs work above Safe Patient Care ratios.   

Our RUSON and RUSOM training at Grampians Health:

  • creates an additional career pathway for undergraduate nurses/midwives 
  • enables fundamental skill development and earlier transition into healthcare teams  
  • is a paid position  
  • provides additional clinical exposure in acute environments  
  • RUSONs may continue into the ‘Graduate nurse transition’ program (pending successful selection) 

Locations

Positions are dependent on availability and funding but may include Ballarat, Horsham and Stawell.

RUSONs and RUSOMs are employed on a fixed-term basis for a minimum of 8 hours per week. Employment ends upon registration as a Registered Nurse or Midwife. It also ends if you withdraw, defer, or fail your undergraduate degree. Leave from work may be required during your clinical placements.
