Grampians Health celebrates the people behind research this International Clinical Trials Day

Wednesday, 20 May 2026

Grampians Health is marking International Clinical Trials Day by celebrating the patients, families and clinical research professionals whose dedication is helping shape the future of healthcare across western Victoria.

Observed annually on 20 May, International Clinical Trials Day is a global day of recognition, honouring the people who make medical research possible. This year’s theme, Research Rising, shines a spotlight on scientific progress, the work of clinical research professionals, and the patients and families who participate in research.

Grampians Health Chief Medical Officer Professor Matthew Hadfield said the day was an important opportunity to recognise and thank the people at the centre of clinical research.

“Today, we recognise and thank every clinical trial participant and their families, along with our clinical research professionals. Their generosity, dedication and commitment enable vital research to take place and contributes to better health outcomes for future generations,” Professor Hadfield said.

Professor Hadfield also acknowledged the dedication of Grampians Health’s clinical research workforce, including clinical trial coordinators, nurses, pharmacists, physician investigators and administrators.

“We are proud to celebrate the amazing team in our clinical trials and research units whose work advances healthcare and improves outcomes for our patients and communities now and into the future,” he said.

“They are at the forefront of scientific development, helping provide regional and rural patients with access to cutting-edge treatments and innovative care closer to home.”

Research is a central focus at Grampians Health, supported by a strong culture of innovation across its sites in Ballarat, Horsham, Edenhope, Stawell and Dimboola.

With around 100 clinical trials currently open, Grampians Health is proud to host the largest clinical trials unit in western Victoria, offering studies across areas including oncology, cardiology, haematology, anaesthetics and more.

“This is only possible because of the commitment, expertise and compassion of our people, who work every day to support participants, advance knowledge and create new opportunities for patients to access innovative care in our region,” said Professor Hadfield.

This International Clinical Trials Day, Grampians Health is encouraging the community to reflect on how they can make a meaningful impact whether that be participating in a trial, supporting a loved one involved in research, or simply learning more about the role of clinical trials in regional healthcare.
