Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
At Grampians Health, we’re committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone — whether you're receiving care or working with us. We believe everyone deserves fair access to healthcare, no matter who they are or where they come from.
We’ve developed a range of plans to guide our ongoing focus on equity, diversity and inclusion. This includes support for:
- First Nations peoples
- LGBTQIA+ community members
- People with disability
- Gender equality
- Preventing and responding to family violence
- Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities
- People living in rural areas
- People of all ages
Our workforce
We aim to attract, develop, and retain a diverse team that reflects the communities we serve. Our goal is to attract, grow and keep staff who are passionate about delivering excellent care.
We promote a culture of respect, teamwork and ongoing learning. This helps our staff feel valued and supported, and ensures we continue to provide safe, high-quality care. Our equity, diversity and inclusion approach is part of everything we do — because we know our people are our greatest strength.
By building inclusive strategies and programs, we aim to improve job opportunities and experiences for underrepresented groups. This also helps us deliver better care for everyone in our community.
We are committed to demonstrating our equity, diversity and inclusion through:
- Reflecting the communities we serve: creating workforces with representation from all diversity groups.
- Working together: understanding the role we all play in creating diverse and inclusive workplaces and making inclusion part of everything we do.
- Diversity at all levels: driving greater diversity at all levels of the organisation—including in leadership and executive roles—and ensuring equal access to opportunities.
- Valuing our people: creating workplaces where the diversity of employees and their perspectives enhance organisational performance and innovation.
- Fair and inclusive practices: implementing policies, procedures and practices that are inclusive for employees and promote accessibility.
- Greater inclusion: embedding inclusive behaviours to create safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces.
- Visible leaders: growing inclusive leadership—at all levels—with leaders who lead by example, positively influence workplace culture, and address processes and behaviours that are not inclusive.
- Accountability: senior leaders actively involved in, and responsible for, the delivery and success of diversity and inclusion initiatives.
- Capability development: providing employees with information, training and development opportunities to create a culture of inclusion, respect and innovation.
- Utilise Workforce Metrics: Collect, monitor, and analyse workforce metrics and employee feedback, such as from the People Matter Survey, to inform EDI initiatives and assess the effectiveness of EDI strategies, policies, plans, and practices.
Our community
We’re working to reduce health gaps in our region. Everyone should have the same chance to live a healthy life — and no one should miss out because of their background or life circumstances.
In Victoria, health outcomes can be affected by things like education, income, occupation, culture, gender and sexuality. These factors often overlap, creating extra barriers for some people.
To improve long-term health outcomes, especially for those facing the biggest challenges, we need to change how services are delivered and how resources are shared. A health equity approach means giving everyone the support they need to reach their full health potential — no matter their situation.
To ensure that we deliver health equity outcomes we will:
- Apply a health equity lens to current and new programs, policies, services, and interventions to ensure they address the barriers to health equity in the community.
- Apply a health equity lens to current and new programs, policies, and services to ensure they do not create or perpetuate health inequity for our consumers and communities.
- Include health equity and social determinants of health in community needs assessment, planning and monitoring of community health standards.
- Provide health equity education to Grampians Health employees and volunteers.
- Maintain an assessment of workforce diversity and apply strategies for recruiting and hiring a workforce that reflect the demographic, cultural and linguistic characteristics of the populations of the Grampians Health catchment.
- Support an ongoing organisation-wide professional development program that aspires to attain core competencies in health equity and cultural responsiveness for staff and volunteers.
- Implement the Victorian Government Safe and Strong: A Victorian Gender Equality Strategy.
- Endorse a trauma informed approach to care.
- Provide care that is Safe, Effective, Connected and Person Centred.
