General medicine

Our General Medicine team manages patients with a broad range of general medical conditions.

Who we care for

We care for people with a wide range of medical issues. This may be as an inpatient, through outpatient clinics, or in your own home where possible.

What you can expect

Our medical team works with nursing staff, allied health and pharmacists to provide you with holistic care.

After you are admitted to hospital (Ballarat or Horsham) you will be assessed by one of our specialist physicians. They will plan additional support and consultation for the treating medical teams.

We have General Medicine outpatient clinics in Ballarat and Horsham to help manage a number of complex medical conditions.

A Rapid Access Discharge (RAD) clinic in Ballarat can provide telephone-based follow-up to help in your recovery following an inpatient stay.

General Medical specialists may be involved when you are admitted for surgery to help manage medical conditions where required.

Our General Medicine units are also extensively involved in the education and training of medical students and prevocational doctors (doctors-in-training).

Referrals and access

  • Admission to the hospital is usually via the Emergency Department.
  • Referrals to Ballarat should go through the Specialist Outpatient Clinic
  • Referrals to Horsham should go through the Alan Wolff Medical Centre
