Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation program supports people living with a chronic respiratory condition to manage your condition following a flare-up. We can help you with exercising safely and managing breathlessness.
Who we care for
We care for people with a chronic respiratory condition, particularly after a hospital admission with a flare up of the condition. These include:
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Bronchiectasis
- Asthma
- Interstitial lung disease
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Lung cancer
- Pre or post lung transplant
What you can expect
Pulmonary rehabilitation is an 8-week exercise and education program, designed to provide you with the skills needed to exercise safely and manage breathlessness. The main aim is to reduce symptoms and any activity limitation by increasing your mobility.
Program goals
- Increase exercise capacity by reducing activity limitations and increasing participation in everyday activities
- Reduce the symptoms of fatigue
- Improve quality of life
- Improve mood and motivation
- Improve adherence to recommended treatments
Following an assessment you will have access to 2 exercise sessions and 1 education session each week for 8 weeks:
- exercise sessions are tailored to your individual needs and goals to increase physical ability
- education sessions help you manage your condition. It provides knowledge on breathing techniques, medication use, and energy conservation
After the 8 weeks you are encouraged to continue with a home-based exercise program. You may also be referred to a suitable community-based option.
