Summer placement for medical students
Medical students from universities across Australia may have the opportunity to spend some time at a health service in a clinical area of interest as part of their course. These rotations are often called ‘elective' terms.
Applications have now open for the 2026-27 summer placement via this link.
Placement periods for 2026-27 are:
- 30 November 2026 to 18 December 2026 (3 weeks)
- 30 November 2026 to 11 December 2026 (2 weeks)
Placements for 2026-27 will open in March 2026 and close at the end of June 2026.

About the program
Grampians Health offers elective placements in various clinical areas for medical students. These areas may include:
- Anaesthetics
- Emergency
- General Medicine
- General Surgery
- Intensive Care Unit
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Paediatrics
- Psychiatry
- Specialised Medicine (Geriatrics, Rehabilitation)
- Specialised Surgery (Urology, ENT, Orthopaedics)
Working in a major regional hospital provides many opportunities for medical students, including:
- more ‘hands on’ experience
- the opportunity to work closely with interns
- exposure to a wide variety of clinical problems across a broad range of patient
How to apply
Applications open in March each year and close in June.
Placements are offered in August, and all paperwork must be submitted in September.
Second round offers will be made in October, with all paperwork to be submitted within two weeks.
We do not accept medical placements outside this period.
Conditions of participation
Our program is available to students who have successfully completed their second year of study at an Australian or international university.
Placements are for a minimum of two weeks, Monday to Friday, with hours varying depending on the department.
Placements will occur from the end of November through to mid-January, generally for two weeks.

Requirements
- Student Placement Agreement (Signed by your University) for Universities who do not hold a current agreement with Grampians Health
- Medical Student Details Form and Internal consent
- Immunisation Checklist
- Police check within 12 months of commencement date
- Victorian Working with Children, and evidence of your university being added to your WWCC
- Statement of Privacy and Confidentiality
- 100 points of ID
- Photo (to be distributed to placement team)
- COVID - 19 Immunisation status
- Fit test (mask fitting) completed within last 12 months
- Hand Hygiene certificate completed within last 12 months
- Any additional paperwork required by your university
